Garmin Foot Pod

| Editorial Review :
This tiny foot pod is small enough to attach to your shoelaces or fit in the mid-sole pocket of compatible shoes. It's always ready to use and automatically turns on when you start moving.
Customer Review :
Works well
I purchased this unit with the intention of using it on my elliptical trainer during those times when it was too late or too wet/windy to walk/jog outside. My Forerunner 305 already accurately records distance and speed without the Foot Pod as long as I'm outside (my preferred method of exercise), and the cadence tracking capability was not all that important to me (I'm an old man, not an athlete in training). It took several iterations to make this gizmo work with the elliptical trainer (Schwinn 430), but I did finally get it to work. I was able to get it to match the cadence, distance, speed and calories expended, to within just a few percent. Unfortunately, the cam mechanism I designed to make the foot pod think I was wearing it on my shoe while running, made enough noise to make my spouse agitated, and therefore rendered my solution impractical. I have replaced my "elliptical trainer solution" with a Garmin bicycle cadence sensor (non contact and therefore totally silent). So now that I already own it, I clip on the Foot pod for my outdoor activities (which is what it is designed for), and it does add one more set of data points for me to use, which I now admit is helpful (cadence). I have used it on a tread mill (Cardiac rehabilitation after the second heart attack), and it works quite well. If I was a hard core runner, this would be a "must have item". In my opinion this little gadget (at more than $80 after shipping) isn't worth the expense unless you are using it indoors to assist in recording data on a tread mill. It is well built and easy to clip on your shoe laces. The instruction manual that come with it is next to useless, but it is a simple enough to use without much instruction if you are not too picky about getting very precise data output (us engineer types are never satisfied with the data we are given!). I would recommend this product to an athlete in training, or to someone who spends a lot of time on a tread mill.

So far so good
I got this for indoor tracks and treadmill running. I have done about a 100 miles so far. I have not calibrated it yet, but it is really close to the tread mill read out--about 4 hundredths difference over 6 miles. What I have noticed is that how you attach it changes the registered pace. Once you get it counting pace the way you want continue to attach it the same way after that.
Overall the pod is small and does not bother me. I really like being able to upload the winter workouts to the Garmin log. I recommend it.

Works Well
I bought the foot pod so I could use my 405CX on an indoor track and have been pleased with the results.
Calibration was easy. On the Garmin 010-00658-30 Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor (Blue) you can calibrate it using the GPS or a 400m track. I chose to use the GPS and it had me run .66 of a mile. Was easy and seems to be pretty accurate. The only issue is that you need to calibrate it at the pace you usually run at. For instance I usually run at a 10 minute/mile pace but since I was only running .66 miles while calibrating it I ran at a much faster pace throwing it off a bit.
Running on a .10 mile indoor track after 3.5 miles it was off by about 50' more by the end of the run. Not perfect by any means but I could probably calibrate it more (or you can adjust it manually) to key it in.
I don't use it running while outside, but if you don't like the pace setting of the GPS you can have the watch display pace according to the foot pod instead.
Installation and removal is easy. The instructions say it will fit in an insole pocket if your shoe has one, but mine does not. To attach it to the laces you slide the mounting bracket under two X's where your shoe laces cross then snap the pod over the top. To remove you have to press a tab that unhooks it. It's very secure and takes a lot of pressure to remove it. I have no fear that it will come off while running.
I am very happy with the pod, it works very well, and is easy to use. If you want to use your GPS watch on a treadmill or indoor track during the winter months, it's a must have.

This may be a great product but I cannot get the foot pod to sync with the heart rate monitor. It may need a new battery...should I have to replace a battery on a brand new item?

Won't Work With Elliptical or Other Non-Impact Machines
I bought the Garmin Foot Pod because I spend a lot of time indoors on an elliptical machine, since my knees are too beat-up to run anymore. Unfortunately, the foot pod is meant to measure impacting exercise machines, like a treadmill, and not the non-impact machines like an elliptical. I wish I'd known that before I paid almost $100 for it! I'm sure that little tidbit is listed somewhere on Garmin's site, but I couldn't find it.
I imagine it will probably also work well as a fail-safe for running through areas where there is spotty GPS coverage, so the unit's not completely useless for me, but it's disappointing.
Otherwise, the unit seems solid enough and has not fallen off my shoe. Of course, I'm not running with it, either. It also connects easily to my 405CX.

Garmin ASTRO BUNDLE DC 30 Collar Plus Astro 220. Tired of searching for your hunting dog in tall grass or dense cover? Now you can leave the hunting entirely to him. Introducing Astro, the first high sensitivity GPS enabled dog tracking system for hunters and sportsmen. This unique system pinpoints your dogs position and shows you exactly where he is, even when you cant see or hear him. The Astro system includes a bright color screen handheld GPS device and the rugged, all weather DC 30 collar. The collar has an integrated GPS transmitter and is specially weighted so the antenna will always point to the sky for optimum signal. To get started, just take Astro outdoors and turn on the handheld and transmitter to acquire GPS satellite signals. Then attach the DC 30 to your dog. Now you are ready to turn him loose / no other setup required. As often as every five seconds, your dogs DC 30 transmits his position to your handheld, and you can see his current location and a trail of where he is been on the Map page of your handheld. Switch over to the Dog Tracker page to view a compass pointing to your dogs location as well as his current status: whether he is running, sitting, on point or treeing quarry. Astro can also sound an alarm to let you know instantly when your dog goes on point. Astro boasts a high sensitivity GPS receiver that can track your dogs position even in the densest cover. You can track up to ten dogs at one time with Astro, at a distance of up to seven miles away /depending on terrain/. The system transmits information by line of sight, so it reaches farthest in flat, open territory.
Customer Review :
Excellent system, but not quite perfect.
This is the best thing available as far as I know, but it could be a little better. I refused to buy until they came out with the DC30 collar. Topo map software is a must-have. I wish they had the option for a shorter collar strap (beagles). As one other reviewer said, making this an all-in-one shock and track would be the bomb. Part of the appeal of this system is that I can tell when a dog is running off-game (deer) by the path they are taking (rabbits make circles, loops, etc.), so I can correct them before they get too far away and get in the highway. I keep one DC30 on an old dog I trust and the other one on younger dogs in training. When I see them separate, there is a good chance the puppy is going astray. I need the tracking collars on the dogs that also wear e-collars. It's quite a lot for a 20lb beagle to carry. I'll be upgrading to the lighter Tritronics G3 series as soon as I can afford it.

Amazing
If you need to get a new or replacement GPS and your a dog hunter you have to really look at these. You can buy the handheld unit without the collar and at the worst you can use it as a regular GPS. We used these last bear season and there great. You just have to keep in mind the range, add on antenna a good option.

Deer hunting toy
Probably one of the best hunting toys I've had ever. I used the Astro 220 on my old deer hound. I could see the direction she was heading and was able to pick her up a couple of miles away crossing the road. This happened several times and considering the time and worry I saved was grateful to have purchased it. I made maps of the hunting area with the GPS and downloaded where the dog traveled that day. The main downside is after turning the dog loose you are locked into retrieving the dog within 17hrs. Using this collar in conjunction with another collar with longer distance and longer battery life may be the way to go. The information gained from using the astro 220 is well worth the trouble.

Now I know where my dog is!
After using this for the first time last weekend it was quite impressed how well it works. I've used telemetry collars in the past, but pin pointing the signal was troublesome at best. Additionally, if you were pointed 180 degrees in the opposite direction you would get a signal. A real problem when you looking for your dog in a dense forest and you start walking in the wrong direction. I got that one back by repeatedly using a whistle and he finally heard me.
For quail hunting in scrub oaks it works wonderfully. Often I would loose track of a dog and they were on point just 15 yards away. I have not been able to run more than one dog at a time because it took too much concentration and I was out there to enjoy the time with my dogs, and not stress out over where they were. I also am not a big fan of bells and beeper collars. They get annoying to listen to them all day. Even using the locate feature on a DT collar wasn't that reliable as the range was not as advertized. The Tritronics beeper collar was also horrible, as my dog would shut it off grouse hunting moving in and out of thick cover.
Next fall I will see how well they work in dense cover.

Garmin 1450
I bought the Garmin nuvi 1450 primarily because of the larger screen. The initial reviews were mixed, but there was only a couple when I was looking to buy. Because Garmin makes a quality product and often the negative product reviews are petty on their other products, I decided to buy one. I've been very happy with the purchase. It takes awhile for the Garmin to acquire the satellite. The biggest warning that I would tell a new buyer is to be patient the first time that you want to use it. You need to turn it on outside and wait forever for it to initialize and find the satellite the first time. They say it takes awhile. No, it takes more than a few minutes. I thought it was broken because I was impatient. :<)

For the money, this is sweet!
Wonderful GPS. I have owned $600 Lowrance units and $200 Tom Tom's. But for the money, this 1450 Garmin is wonderful. The support online for updating the unit and adding some custom touches to the gps are really nice. BUT there are only two items that I don't like about this gps. First, is the "lane viewer" or what ever they call it sucks. (The feature that shows a picture of the signs that you will be seeing) I travel 6 states for business and drive through major cities; Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Cinci, Indianapolis, etc... I had it only show me the picture of the signs that show what lane to be in twice after visiting all these cities. This was a bonus feature for me, not a selling point. That's why I didn't have it affect the way I rated it. Second, is when trying to find a hotel or gas station, it shows them surrounding you. That is great, but I wish there was an option to see what is on the way to your destination. I want to see what is in front of me, not behind. This just makes it harder and longer to find what you are looking for. So once again, not a huge problem for me. Now, if you care about bluetooth or voice navagation, I don't so can't give you a review on that. I mute mine and just glance at it from time to time. But what I can tell you is the ease of finding your destination, the continued updating online, the fact you can rate a hotel or destination, the size of the screen, easy to use, and how you can add a destination or correct a current destination, are things I love about the 1450 Garmin. Great price and very happy with it. I recommend this product!

Great GPS with horrid tech support....
This is my third Garmin GPS and I really like everything about it EXCEPT their tech support. None of the three worked right out of the box, I had to call tech support for all three of them. The first one took about two hours with tech support to get it working. The second one took four hours to get it registered, then I signed it up for the lifetime maps update program which is a fantastic deal. Unfortunately they sent a bad link to the updates and that took two full days for tech support to correct and send the proper link.
The third one is brand new, A Nuvi 1450. Now that it's working it's a fantastic unit but here's what we went through to get it working:
It wouldn't register on line, I waited 35 minutes on hold for a tech support person, then spent four hours getting it to register. I tried to use it and got an error message 'can't unlock maps'. Another 40 minutes on hold with tech support, another three hours fussing with it and I was told that I just needed to update the maps (Updating maps on a Garmin takes about 4 and a half hours). I spent the time, updated the maps, turned it on and got the same error message: 'can't unlock maps'. At this point I'd invested nearly eight hours on the phone with tech support, plus the four and a half hours to update the maps and STILL did not have a working GPS.
I waited till the next day to call Garmin Tech Support... only spent ten minutes on hold that time, and the tech support guy had it fixed in just a few minutes.
The result of all this: While I really like all three Garmin units and they all work very well I'll be looking for another manufacturer if I need another GPS. Garmins are indeed easy to use, they work very well and do a great job but the greatest product in the world is no better than the tech support offered - and Garmin is failing miserably in that area.

TRACKING KEY LAS-1505 LandAirSea Tracking Key
Customer Review :
Units work well, software is poor at best!
First let me say that I have used all types of GPS units for almost 10 years, I currently own 3 LAS units including one of the Tracking Keys. I like the units, they work well, they track very well and allthough they are not "live" type units they work great as data loggers. My only grip is the bad software that comes with the units. It is hard to download the data, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. I use the units on three different computers using Windows XP, but each time it takes numerous attempts to download the data. Once downloaded the tracking data is very good, very accurate. The problem with all three units (all different units) is the bad software! If the company would fix the software they would have a winning combination. Nothing more fustrating than trying over and over to download data.

Absolutly amazing
This product does amazing things. I wasn't sure how well it would work but it does do what it claims and more. At first I only thought that it just gave a reveiw of where the car went. Then I started playing with the top icons. It really shows every thing. Where car went, how long it stopped, and the complete route the car took showing every street the car drives on. It is amazing.
Rating :
LAS-1505 excellent for price, others in class better
The LAS-1505 is excellent for price, I got one here for $100 (Feb2010).
As noted the unit lacks power on/off and the torx bit screws are a bit of a pain, BUT use a 1/4" wide x 1" strip of marking tape between the battery and terminal and you can have an "on switch" when you need it. By doing so, unit is always at the ready when I understand our teen driver is about to get the car for the evening!
So far no surprises, either in functioning of the LAS-1505 or in unexpected visits by the kid to unknown destinations.

LAS is a POS
I read about every GPS logger on Amazon and was hoping this was the right one.
Problems that caused me to return it:
-Despite some claims that the batteries lasts 3 weeks, mine lasted 2 days before the red battery light went on -Very difficult to get a satellite lock, at least in NYC. I went on top of a building and was able to get a lock. After this, I walked several miles and downloaded the data. It jumped around way too much and was missing lots of data as well -Device packaging is low quality. The screw holes are little wings of plastic that come somewhat broken. Not great considering you have to take the batteries out anytime you want to turn it off and the battery life is bad -Software is for Windows only -I called customer support and they weren't very helpful. Suggested pretty quickly that I might need to return the device to the seller if I'm not getting a sat lock.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM; POOR DECISION IF YOU DO!
This GPS is junk/garbage. It states that it is water resistant. Be sure you know water resistant means that you cannot place it on the bottom of a vehicle even though it states that in the guidebook.
We had it one day....Cleveland...snow. I put it on the bottom of the car (one of their "recommended" places in their guidebook). It got damp; didn't work; never was able to use it; light would not go green again on the tracking device. I called the company and they stated they would sell me a DISCOUNTED one to replace it. Funny thing...DISCOUNTED ONE was more than the original I purchased. Scam company!! There is NOT ONE WORD in the entire guidebook about water damage, not a single word! All it states is that it is water resistant. The CSR goes on to tell me that there was a SEPARATE yellow sheet explaining about water, nothing in the 12 page guidebook. I recommnended they put it on the page with all the recommended locations to place it and an asterisk, *If you place on your vehicle and water comes in contact, you will be purchasing a new one at our discounted price which is more than our retail price.

Customer Review :
Great GPS Navigation!
I have had this going on a month now and find it to be one of the best, if not THE best GPS Vehicle Nav I have come across. I've several handhelds of various names as well, but in sticking with the scope of this review, I will only mention my previous experience with the vehicle GPS units.
I've had just about every brand name of GPS unit in search of the "perfect" one. Up until now, the closest I came was with a Nuvi 350 when it was first released in 05, which I foolishly sold as I wasn't using it as much as I had originally thought. Back then, GPS Nav was a nicety and not nearly as "big" as it is today. Since then, I've had units from Magellan, Cobra, Finedrive (Ugh!), Whistler, TomTom, Mio(My favorite TeleAtlas based brand) and Navigon. All had their plusses and minuses but, never really hit that sweet spot. With the exception of one small detail, the 1300 FINALLY gets it.
I can't tell you how happy I am to be back to a Navtech based device. While TeleAtlas certainlny has come a long way, it's still not as accurate as Navtech. I still have two of my TeleAtlas based units(Mio and TomTom) and have done a series of comparisons between the 1300 and the others, with the 1300 being the most accurate. The Navigon actually has free map updates and is running the very latest maps, but still falls short in comparison.
The routing alogarythim is also much better in this unit than with rest. With the exception of the Nuvi 350, of course, which routes very similar to the 1300. That's not to say, there are no routing flaws. All GPSes have flaws, and this is no different. However, the strange routes are far less than with my previous units.
And last, but not least: Appearance. Good lord this thing is gorgeous! The map display is top notch and looks great scrolling through whatever road I may be on. I know this doesn't really matter to some, but for those who like good looking graphics, this is the unit for you!
Also, I HIGHLY suggest getting the 1300T over the 1300. That is if you live in an urban area and are affected by traffic on your commute. This has saved me TONS of time, as people around here can't seem to drive through a simple tunnel without crashing daily! I will point out, however, the free lifetime traffic does come at a small cost. There are unobtrusive ads(hotels mostly) at the bottom of the screen when on the traffic menu. These only show when not moving and are quite small. Definitely not something to get in a fuss over, but thought I'd point it out.
The only thing I would change about this model(and the whole Garmin vehicle line) is the ability to better control your detours. On my previous TomTom, Magellan, Navigon and Cobra, I could tell it how far to reroute and in some instances, choose the route. Garmin just gives you one Detour and that's it. Sometimes even putting you back on the same road a few miles up. This isn't as much of a problem with the traffic module, as it automagically routes you around the traffic. But it would still be nice to have more tweakability.

Two things you need to know about the 1300T
The Garmin 1300T is a nice GPS navigation device with the usual features, plus the additional great feature of FREE lifetime traffic information. But there are two things you need to know about the traffic information feature. First, in order for it to work, the device needs to be connected to the charger, and the charger needs to be plugged into the car cigarette lighter. This is because the antenna receiving the traffic info is located on the charger wire. The traffic information feature will not work if the device not connected to the car through the charger. Second, the traffic information feature also provides advertising - the advertisers are apparently the ones who are paying Garmin and the traffic system so that you can have free traffic info. The advertisements show up on a small line at the bottom right of the screen when the device is in the traffic info mode (which is a separate display from the navigation mode). Note of this is explained in the very brief quick-start guide. Another thing a buyer should know is that an 100/220 volt "home" charger is NOT included in the box. Also a case for the device is NOT included in the box. But you can buy these separately for additional money. My only criticism is that all of these things are not clearly brought to the attention of the buyer before the purchase.

Good GPS among this price range
First of all, I am a MAP guy. I like paper maps, Paper maps at my local AAA and they have gotten me to my destination for years without problems. That said, I work in the transportation industry as a dispatcher. My drivers often claim that they can not find a street because it does not show up on their GPS. This is because they do not enter the information correctly. Street numbers, Street spelling are very important with all GPS receivers.
I have traveled to the Sierra foothills to the local drives in the San Francisco bay area. The free traffic alerts are pretty accurate. The GPS navigation routes are pretty direct and good. When I take my own route or a turn, it recalculates quickly and gives me the direction to where I need to go. Satellite acquisition is quick and have never had a problem with it. The points of interest are nice to find post offices, restaurants, and other stores. Has the option to spell out the particular name of the retail outlet you may be looking for.
I would recommend this Model to anyone looking for a GPS receiver with good features and is priced reasonably. Use with conjunction with a Iphone or regular map, its all the GPS I would ever need. Now I want to see how long it will work without problems. At the time of this review, Ive owned it for little over a month.

Questions & Answers
Question : GPS Trackers?
I'm looking into getting a GPS tracker for my car (portable one). Is there any brand that is better then others? Are they permanent in your car? How do they work? Is there a monthly fee for ones that tell you were traffic is? How do they get updated (since roads change)? Do you have to program them? I'm looking for one that can give me directions when i'm trying to find a place. Any information is great! Thanks

Question : what is your opinion on gps car trackers for teenagers?
im doing a debate thing for school, and i was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this topic. What do you think about putting GPS trackers in teenager's cars? thankss!!!!!
Answer:
It depends on who owns the car. If the parents are the owners then I think they can do what they want to the car, however if the teen is the owner then it is an invasion of privacy.

Question : Do they have gps trackers on rental cars?
Say on a whim i am out of town with my rental car, i am covered with the insurance for a stolen car, and my rental ends up getting stolen. Would the rental car company be able to gps track the car down? Or would the police just have to handle the matter?
Answer:
Some do -- I heard of a case last year in California (where else?) where a woman rented a vehicle and didn't declare on the agreement that she would take the vehicle out of state, (Nevada, for about 12 hours). When she returned her rental car they, in turn, presented her with a bill for over eight hundred additional dollars (which, by the way, they had already deducted from her credit card). There was a clause in the contract, in very small print, that stated that the driver/renter must declare beforehand to the rental agency if the vehicle would be driven out of state. They knew because the car was equipped with a hidden GPS tracking device. FYI - the device also recorded her speeds...From now on I will be sure to ask about this whenever I rent a car.

Question : Are GPS trackers for children a good idea?
Parents can apparently know where their kids are at all times. Personally I think this is just silly and overprotects kids to such an extent that they have no sense of responsibility. Why not just not bother cutting the umbilical chord?I have 2 daughters who have been brought up responsibly. They tell me where they are and phone me if to ask if they want to stay later. That's the important thing, giving them a sense of common sense and trusting them.
Answer:
It's no substitute for keeping your eyes on your children at all times.
