The Best GPS on the Market to me !!!

I had eye surgery, but able still to drive. This GPS locks the signal fast, great sound quality, and wonderful colors with many, many options. I don't need anything fancy, but something simple. This is It !!

Waited for a larger screen size.... this Tom Tom XXL 540 S has It all, easy to interchange on your computer with current map down loading free for 30days, the Tom Tom home page is a lot of fun - GPS is well made very sturdy easy to input directions and the lane guidance feature is great. The only problem was the holder that came with the XXL 540S I have trouble keeping the part that snaps on the speaker in the back of the unit to stay put, Tom Tom TS was very helpful and friendly and US speaking people.

The TomTom XXL540S 5 inch provides clear audibles and a well lit, attractively colored screen. It mounts and is removed rather easily. It couldn't find a nearby WalMart, Aldis, or Lowes but, neither could the Navigator of my Prius! I wish it provided driving route options more easily, but it serves well the purpose for which it was purchased-- namely, to provide my 2002 Mountaineer with the capabilities to which I've grown accustomed in my Toyota Prius.

I bought this as a gift for my friend. I have navigation in my dash (lexus). I think the tom tom is better in some cases. I doesn't re-route as quickly as my navigation system, but eventually figures out if you choose a different route. it has neat options. I does take about 1 minute to plan a route (no different from my navigation). The feature i appreciate the most is to upgate the maps. There are free downloads available for the Tom Tom. Lexus costs $350 for each upgrade. A comparison to the garmin is about $50 a year. The screen is a nice size. It is heavy, compared to some other models. All in all I think it was a good purchase. On thing to note, it may be cheaper somewhere else.

I really like the annoucement of the street names on this upgraded model. It makes it easier to focus on the busy freeways and exits. I also like the ability to have an alert for school zones. And most of all, I like to be able to SEE the huge 5" screen!! The upgrade from the ONE 125 was well worth the price.

Buyer Beware

There is a problem with these units. I bought mine 6 months ago and it was the best GPS I ever owned. Then my screen started to flicker. Then the screen went black while my wife was driving home from an unfamiliar airport. I still have this problem and I am contacting TOMTOM. Its most likely defective so if you are going to buy this GPS prepare to be sending it back after 6-12 months.

My TomTom 920T will be three years old in two months. Altho I love my TomTom for its special features and intuitive programs, recently I find that fully charged, the TomTom PORTABLE(?) unit only lasts 30 minutes unless it's plugged in. I contacted the service team to return the unit for a new battery/repair, and was advised that TomTom does not - IN ANY WAY - technically support its product after its limimited one year warranty! When I questioned their support tech further, I was advised that my $500+, less than three-year-old unit is basically trash. Read the fine print! TomTom does not stand behind their products!

After 1 year 9 months our [...] dollar Tomtom 920 T quit working. Called tech support. Was informed that they only repair units under warranty.I ask the the tech support what I was to do with my Tomtom put it in the garbage?????? His reply was "Pretty much so" I informed him that I would not ever purchase another one of their pieces of s--t. So you better hope your Tomtom breaks while under warranty.

Best of The Best

I was a Garmin user for years (StreetPilot 530 then Nuvi 650) but after GPS market research last year I decided to buy Go 920T (June '08). I did not like it at first because of too complicated menu. BUT I did get latest firmware and map updates last month (Mar '09) and since then my opinion about this unit has changed - I LOVE this device!!! Especially Lane Assistant which shows a picture of upcoming exits on highways marking these lanes you should be on to continue your trip without mistakes. When I used any of my Garmins I was always confused on multilaned exits very often picking up a wrong one and that was the main issue that pushed me to find such GPS navigator that would guide me with precision. This device really plans local routes as I would by myself thanks to new intelligent route planning. Traffic receiver is very precise and Go 920T asks you before you reach traffic jam "I have found a new route that saves you 25 min because of traffic. Do you want to choose a new route" You press YES on the screen and you're on the right track again!
You cannot go wrong with this wonderful device for $360.

I've always been convinced that the TomTom was the best GPS available, and told all my friends about it, until I finally bought one myself. I've had it for two years now, and although it has served me well when it worked there were some issues with Customer Service.

1. Since we use the TomTom in both the United States and in Europe it made sense to purchase a GPS with both sets of maps. However, when I first received the device it only came with the RDS cable for the US, which doesn't work in Europe, so I didn't get the real time, up-to-date traffic information on traffic jams and construction, etc.
Customer service in the US told me to contact Customer service in Europe, and when I did, all they did was email me a link to their shop to purchase the RDS cable for Europe, which is an absolute insult paying almost $[...].- for the device. (Yes, I bought it the summer it came out!!)

2. The promotion code was inactive after 6 months, and after contacting customer service yet again, I was only able to get updates for the US maps, and NOT the Europe maps.

3. When I tried downloading the US map set to the device it gave me an error: "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY AVAILABLE". Customer service told me to delete all the voices, install the maps on the device, then re-install the voices. This obviously is a design error, since flash memory is so cheap, a $700.- device that claims it it is capable of playing videos, audio books and mp3 files and yet it doesn't have enough space for regular software and map updates!! This obviously is ridiculous!!

4. With the last software update and the latest US maps available loaded onto the device, my wife and I traveled to the US from Europe, and upon arrival turned on the device which usually automatically recognizes being in a different country. After a few minutes of not doing anything I went into the menu and tried switching the maps manually from Europe to US. It gave me this ERROR: you can't use this map on this device: North_America-15!!
Very disappointing when you're dependent on a GPS device and our travel plans included DC and Atlanta. Customer service told me to delete some files on the device and re-install the maps. I obviously didn't have the usb adapter while traveling, so the advice was as useless as the device.

Luckily my in-laws had a Garmin Streetpilot 330 which I was able to use. The Garmin is at least 5 years old, so being the geek that I am, I performed a software update on it, which surprisingly took only about a minute, the TomTom takes very long. I always like to test things for what they're worth and the Garmin went over a week without charging. I used it everyday for a few hours, including indoors when putting in the itinerary. I couldn't believe that it lasted that long, because the TomTom never lasted longer than 2 hours, even when it was brand new.

Summing up, the TomTom did ace a few tests when compared to other devices, however the customer service isn't very accommodating. Software updates are free, but map updates are really expensive after the first year. Compared to Garmin and Navigon you probably get more for you buck, some even offer free lifetime maps. So shop around and compare before you commit to TomTom. Style and hype aren't worth the disappointment.
