Editorial Review :

This is a refurbished GPS. Refurbished generally means that the unit has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the navigator back to like new conditions. Some GPS may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portable GPS navigators with its nüvi 765T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio--including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks--from the device to your car radio.

Garmin's nüvis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor..
New to the nüvi 7x5 lineup is Garmin's HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 765T includes Bluetooth connectivity to your cell phone and free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver.

The Garmin nüvi 7x5 Series
  • nüvi 755T: North American maps, GTM 20 traffic receiver with lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 765T: Adds Bluetooth handsfree communication; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 775T: Pre-loaded European and North American maps; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic, Bluetooth
  • nüvi 785T: Adds enhanced MSN Direct traffic receiver; includes North American maps and Bluetooth
As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nüvi 7x5 line features three other models--check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nüvi GPS navigators.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

The nüvi 765T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

With Junction View, you'll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage--signs not needed for navigation are faded.
Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7x5 series, you'll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you'll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren't needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. Watch informational video

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. WIth Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker, you can match your nüvi to any Bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nüvi 7x5 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?" At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin's Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.
  • Choose from Panoramio's collection of photos from around the world.
  • Easy to use interface displays photos on Google Maps.
  • Search for photos by location name or map area boundary.
  • Transfer photos directly from Garmin Connect to device with the Garmin Communicator.
  • View photos in Google Earth.
  • Supports Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2+, Safari 3+ on Windows and Mac.

Other Features

The 3D Buildings feature helps you navigate by landmark.

  • The 3D Buildings feature is able to reference the buildings displayed on the map as well. Some buildings will be grey images "extruded" from the map, other buildings will be life like representations of the actual property.
  • With Automatic Time Zone Transition, you'll never have to remember to set the time as you travel. When the unit acquires a position fix, it automatically sets the unit to the correct time zone.
  • MP3 player compatible with audiobook playback
  • JPEG picture viewer
  • FM transmitter plays voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system
  • Compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide, which provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts.

Nuvi 765T

This 765T is easy to set up and use. Maps are accurate and it gets you where you want to go. The only problem I have had is the 765T is a little slow to update itself while driving, especially if you have to vary from the planned route slightly. It seems so accurate that when you go even a few yards off route, like a minor detour for road repairs, it begins a recalculation and once or twice has given me incorrect vocal instructions then a few seconds later corrects itself again. This could be bad if you are coming into an unfamiliar intersection that might be under construction - the car gets ahead of the recalculation and you might miss a turn. The beauty of this GPS is that it can always recalculate again and get you back on track. Well worth the bucks.

Fantastic features, but a little glitchy

I love all of the features that this nuvi offers. However, it can be a little glitchy. Sometimes I touch the screen in one spot and a different spot responds. Sometimes it "forgets" my destination setting and I have to enter it again. The traffic subscription seems to find phantom delays.

Fantastic Gps.

I did a lot of research for a Gps..I'm very happy with this purchase..It works even better than I was expecting..

Could have done better at Buy.com

The unit appears to do everything I hoped it would, though I thought I was buying a new item instead of a refurbished unit. I could have ordered a refurb through [...]. I especially like the the MapSource feature which lets you plan complex routes with custom waypoints on your computer and transfer them to the GPS. I have to admit that I haven't figured out how to get the routes to appear in the GPS yet, only the custom waypoints, but that's a start.

Biggest bang for you buck from Garmin!

It has all the features you want from the more expensive Garmins but for a fraction of the costs! Great screen, beautiful navigation prompts. The only real weakness is the traffic service. I find it very intermittent and not accurate for accidents or new issues, good for construction information though.

A few notes

If my memory serves me correctly, this is my first Amazon review.

Overall, this is a very good deal. I have a Nuvi 370 bought in 2007. My new apartment address is not in the map, now it shows in the GPS. a couple notes:

1. Don't be intimidated. The whole process is very easy, basically you are just waiting.
2. Before you start, you better create an account first and need to download Garmin communicator plugin.
3. Log in your account. Type a new link on the back of the card to activate map.
4. Select your device to link the map to your device.
5. Plug in your GPS, and start download.
6. Wait....
7. Run the downloaded map file (with device linked), the update process starts. I select save the new map to the default location.
8. Wait... for about 3-4 hours. Basically it is transferring new map to your GPS to replace the old one.
9. Done.

Hope it helps.

Difficult to use

The convenience of not having to buy new maps every year is what attracted me to this package. That's the good part. The software is very user unfriendly and caused my XP professional computer to BSOD several times. This caused the updating process to take several hours. the good news, is that the program remembers where you were when it crashed. The program is also agonizingly slow, it has to unpack itself every time you open it, so you have to go through this each time you reboot due to the BSOD.

Just can't deny the cost-effectivenenss!

Garmin wants $80 a year to update? No thanks when Amazon sells their lifetime updates for this price! I got mine for about $75 and then the price went up. Even at the current price, it's a great value! It was simple to register and update my Garmin Nuvi 260W with. A great value that no one can deny!

Rating :

If you plan on updating your garmin more than once--this is worth it

The price of a single update is quite high in comparison to the price of this lifetime update. This will pay for itself if you plan on doing 2 or more updates to your garmin unit. This is the same thing as sold on the garmin website--genuine product. You won't have any problem using it. Generally, it is cheaper here on amazon than on the garmin website.

This updates the map and points of interest. And remember that you can only update the maps that are already on your garmin (meaning you can't get a lifetime europe update if you only have north america on your unit).

Rating :

Great value

Lifetime updates for less than twice the price of one update, and up to four times a year.

Once you have registered your product online, getting updates is as easy as going to the Garmine site, entering the key number and the software checks for available updates and loads them if needed.

It works better than my factory NAV unit!

The Bluetooth feature sucks!

The Garmin is one of the best GPS navigation systems out there, but their Bluetooth feature absolutely sucks. I have an entertainment system in my car that does most everything, including bluetooth connections. I purchased this Garmin to be able to connect with my system so that I would be able to hear the street directions over my entire sound system. I could not get the Garmin to connect, and I have determined it was not designed to do that. This is my third experience with GPS devices, and frankly, it would be paramount for the design to be broadcast through the sound system, the audio quality is a 1000 times more superior. When you are driving your car, you really don't do as much visual as you do audio regarding the directions that are broadcast from the GPS. I have to ask Garmin, why would you design a GPS system to connect to a Bluetooth phone?

Rating :

Best GPS I've owned

This is the top GPS for me. It has all the features that you would ever need and gives the directions clearly and at a volume that you desire. I've used it around town and it may not enunciate the street name as you would, but its darn close. The only con is that it gives instructions to the next interchange so sometimes you have a little farther to drive than what you'd anticipated. OF course, it also gives you a good time of arrival and I've found that to be accurate. It even changes that according to your driving situation-slow traffic vs. fast.

Rating :

NOT a good !!!!!!

This unit does NOT give you enough notice of upcoming fuel stations. Does fine on past stations. Gives directions clear off the board sometimes, that are NOT EVEN CLOSE to taking you where you want to go !!!! NOT as good as the 255W it replaced !!!!!!

Rating :

What I needed..plus

This Garmin does everything I expected--plus. Easy to use, with a clear display, it talks me through the turns, speaking at just the right times for me to make maneuvers safely. No ambiguity, no confusion. And it provides all the information I need. I was out in a fairly rural section of Connecticut, and yet it turned up a wealth of POI's. I found a pharmacy in seconds.

My only complaint has to do with the Bluetooth connection. Occasionally it doesn't find my phone. When this happens, I have to go through several screens to get it to link up. But this is a rare and minor annoyance.

Rating :

Good for the price

Many other reviewers already said all the good and bad things about it so I am not going to repeat them.

My biggest complain is that the map updating process is so painfully complicated and slow. Other than that, it's not bad for the money I paid.

Question : Is it impossible to make XP work on a laptop with pre-installed Vista
Please help me get around this problem, or I will go mad I got this HP laptop as a present, and it had Vista pre-installed, which I want to replace with XP. I formatted and just left the recovery partition, and then tried with 3 different XP CDs but in all three cases I got the blue screen of death. Why Is there any way to make it work Not only that, but I searched for hardware drivers online and the only ones available on their official websites are for Vista and up. What the hell happened to user choice So basically if a company has a deal with MS you can only use their product with that OS only I'm very angry because it's a really good laptop and Vista is simply not my choice. If you know how to make XP work on such a laptop, let me know.I also have another laptop with pre-installed Vista, on which I want to install Linux. Don't tell me I can't do that eithertripptk: I'm not trying to give Vista a bad rep. I simply believe that as a user I should have the option of using any OS I like.

Answer:
good luck you should give vista a chancehttp://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2287685,00.asp

Question : how get pre-installed vista on hard drive on to another hard drive
The laptop that I want to get has a 40 GB hard drive.I have a 500 GB 2.5 hard drive but that 40 GB hard drive will have windows vista on it,My question is " can i copy that vista onto the 500gb hard drive that I have" so i can replace it and is it a good idea with duel core and 2 sticks of ramthe other specs are good but the HD on the laptop is lacking

Answer:
It's certainly possible, if you have a usb enclosure for the new drive so you can connect both drives to the laptop at once, you should be able to find a disk duplicator tool to do it. It sounds like you might not have the laptop yet. It will come with (or give you a way to create when you first start it) a restore CD which can install Vista. You could then install the new HD and use the restore CD to put vista back on. This won't copy your personal files however so it's only the best solution if you can deal with starting the new drive from scratch.

Great deals for GPS devices on Amazon. Check it out!
