Great product for the money
This is a great GPS, very easy to use, and works great. It doesn't have all the features of the better models such as the GPS ability to say the street names instead of just saying "turn left", but it was far cheaper than the next model up.
I would buy it again.

Good value
It's a good machine. It gets the satellite signal fast and I can even navigate inside my house. :-) A message for Garmin enterprises: Make t possible to sell more detailed map please. Recently I use it for Panama. which is outside Panama City is not a good map.

Garmin 205W - OK with me!
Received the Garmin 205W a few days later than anticipated. Product performs as indicated. Being a 1st time user, a small instruction book would be a good addition. after playing with the unit a few times one can link to locations and maps without much problem. When errors or mistakes are made the operation is extremely forgiving and easily corrected.
Good product for the $$... Highly recommended be this mapping rookie....

good gadget
Its all good. I really like it because its functional and really helps a lot. I wish there was a clock somewhere on the screen or as a screen saver for example since i don't have one in my car. But I am happy with it any ways.

Get the extended warranty!! Bought and returned two lemon units...
I bought one of these units after my previous Nuvi developed a problem whereby the power kept shutting off. Alas, the warranty period had expired. The next time around, I bought the extended warranty offered by the store.
I'm glad I did, because the audio voice immediately began stuttering. "Doctor Martin Luther King Drive" became "da-ma-er-ing...... (long pause) Drive". So I returned it to the store and got another unit in the same model, and then left on an extended vacation. The voice again stuttered, even when we disconnected the power cable. So, back to the store I went to return it.
It's possible that these two units were shipped to the store at the same time and suffered some secret catastrophe together, so that I got two successive lemons. The store clerk agreed that they must have been dropped. The manual in the second box was for the "205W", which also raised my suspicions about what it had gone through prior to my purchase!
As far as the use of the unit itself, I find the "traffic" and MPH features to be quite cool, although the unit thinks five cars in a line is "traffic ahead". In choosing a route, it does not always perform flawlessly, so it's still a good idea to have a map and at least *some* idea of where you are going, and upgrade your maps at least annually.
In comparison to my first model, as others have noted, the streets that are not on your immediate route are not always named, which I find annoying because I'm used to having more detail and knowing which street is next.
This model seemed to take an exceptionally long time to find satellites, compared to my inaugural unit. It's not a bad unit for the price, but... get the extended warranty if you can!!

My first GPS
As it says, this is my first sojourn into the GPS world, so I don't have anything for comparison. I am overall very pleased with the Garmin, and find t fairly easy to use. I have two wishes for a GPS that has nothing to do with the good productivity of this product. I wish that there was an option to save more than just my one home address, so that I could use several different starting or ending points without having to re-enter the address each time. The other thing which I am certain is standard among all GPS is when you turn the unit on, you have to scan through the "agreement" screens each time before loading the maps. Overall, I would buy this item again or recommend it to anyone!

Best Product I have ever pruchased!!!
I absolutely love this machine. I purchased this for a trip with my dad going to places I had never been before and we easily found every hotel and/or place we wanted to see or go to. I have also used my nuvi around my town (Metro Atlanta) and have found new ways to get places that I didn't know about before. I have lived in this area for 18 years. We also used this last weekend to go to southeast Georgia and we were averted away from backed up traffic twice. The second time my husband wasn't going to listen to "Constance" (my nuvi) but received a reprieve when we ended up in the soup and were just able to get off and away from the trouble. My husband said he would never doubt Constance again. Plus I can easily answer my phone hands free without having to scramble and look for it while driving. "THIS IS GREAT!!!!!"

Questionable ethics on the part of Garmin
Beware. When I purchased the 255WT, it did not come with a USB-to-USBmini cord, so I tried one that I got with a USB external disk drive. Neither my Mac nor my friend's PC would recognized the unit, so I couldn't register it. I sought assistance from the techs at a nearby Best Buy, and they discovered that it was the USB connection, whereupon they wanted to sell me a $20 USB cable; they also told me that most camera and disk drive USB cables would not work properly. If you buy one of these, be prepared to purchase a special cable with which to connect it, otherwise you might not be able to register it, which is required in order to get your firmware and maps updated. You won't get all you pay for unless you buy more stuff. That seems a bit unethical to me.

Janky GPS, no Traffic as Advertised,
I'm in the market for a new GPS to replace my old Navigon 2200 GPS. Tried several models and purchased this one during one of Amazon's many GPS sales. I found this GPS a bit annoying to use. First I purchased the WT model which claims to include the Traffic, but it actually doesn't. It uses MSN Direct as it's traffic monitor but it never explains how to actually activate it, even though it constantly prompts you to everytime the unit starts up. I'm assuming I have to do it by plugging the unit into my PC. But the free MSN traffic only lasts 6 months, after that you have to pay.
I tried out the free trial of the Safety Camera subscription. This doesn't seem to work well at all, it was very random on the safety notices - when I looked around I didn't see a single Safety camera. I drove around the beltway for a few days then on the fourth day all of a sudden there's a safety camera warning every mile on the beltway. There are no Safety cameras on the Beltway, so where it was pulling this data from, I don't know.
It has a really good POI database, I used it to find eating places around my new office location and it worked flawlessly.
This unit fails at it's most basic function which is giving directions. It's excellent once it catches on and calculates, but a lot of times when you are leaving an Office Building, or Shopping Parking lot, it refuses to navigate it's way out of such areas. All it'll say is Go to X Street, or X Highway with no directions on how to actually get to X Highway. It doesn't tell you which way to turn or anything, sometimes the road you need to be on after leaving a Parking lot is 2 or 3 blocks away. It was annoying beyond belief. Some days the Voice Direction worked, others, it didn't. Sometimes the refresh is a few seconds slow and the directions will lag by a few seconds - so if you have to make a sudden turn this may cause an issue.
I like the favorites function, but I don't like clicking 3 times just to get to it.
The positives of the unit are, it has a pretty interface with big colorful icons, the POI db is really good, very accurate once it actually starts navigating, the fonts are all nice and big. I also really liked the holder, it felt solid and gave enough room where you can bend it in just about any direction. Unlike Tom Tom's which was so rigid it broke the minute I tried to move it.
I also hate feeling nickel and dimed, when you plug the GPS into your computer and go to the Garmin store, there are a bunch of really cool optional features for this unit but everything costs $80 or more. So if I wanted things like traffic, speed cameras, special maps, etc... It'd cost me another $200 or $300. Not cool.
I ended up returning the unit. The GPS hunt goes on...

GREAT SYSTEM
This is a great unit. The only drawback to the whole experience is that it took about six hours to do the one free map download. Other than that it is wonderful. This is our first GPS and we will absolutely get a Garmin again. Everything is so user friendly. We love it !!!!

The nüvi 780 adds enhanced MSN direct content to the multi-destination routing and "Where Am I?" features and gorgeous widescreen display of other nüvi 700s to create a superior navigation device for business as well as casual drivers. As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. All of the 700-series navigators also feature a rich array of features including spoken directions in real street names, integrated traffic receivers, MP3 player and photo viewer, and an FM transmitter that will play voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system.
Enhanced MSN Direct Content (9-month free subscription) An integrated receiver allows you to access enhanced dynamic content from the MSN Direct service. Check the weather, avoid traffic backups, compare local gas prices, get enhanced movie listings, stock information, news and local events when you travel with your unit. Even plan trips from the convenience of your computer, via Windows Live Local, and wirelessly send custom to your nüvi.
- Free 9 month trial subscription to MSN Direct services, activation instructions provided
- MSN Direct Traffic Receiver included in the box
- Extended MSN Direct service subscriptions available for purchase: 12 months for $49.95 + tax (visit MSN for further details)
Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).
A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Where Am I? Where's My Car? The nüvi 700 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?"
At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, the nüvis in the 700 series automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount. See Better, See More The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
First Rate Map Data The nüvi 780 is preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.
Hands-Free Calling In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi 780's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.
Garmin Lock Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location
Easy To Use Interface Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 780 features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, MP3 player, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.
This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs.
Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras. Trick Your GPS Ride
Like all nüvis, the 780 supports configurable vehicle icons. These fun, customized car-shaped icons come in a variety of colors to add a personal touch to your vehicle's position on the map. With this GPS system on board you'll be prepared to steer clear of traffic with the integrated FM TMC traffic receiver. The nüvi is designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

Bluetooth Incompatibility
I like the features of this unit as far as the routing to multiple points. My biggest disappointment is with the bluetooth. Why not make it clear that only certain phones are compatible? I bought this unit for my wife and her phone would not link up to the unit. So, I look on the Garmin website and, sure enough, her phone is not supported ... why? I was able to get her a separate hands-free bluetooth kit for another $30 but I was under the impression that bluetooth devices would all be compatible with each other. Lesson learned, I guess, but it would be nice to have a link to supported devices right from the page concerning this unit.

I have used other GPS tracking systems, but this is the first one I have purchased. I chose the Garmin nuvi 780 purchased through Amazon because of the Bluetooth, MSN direct, and cost factor. With my current limited use I have found that this GPS meets my needs for ease of access, accurate description of street addresses, and wide viewing screen. It describes upcoming turns and exits well in advance of getting to them and repeats the information, should you become distracted. I would recommend this GPS for the novice to slightly advanced dirver.

It's good...but...
THE BAD: The FM transmitter is horrible. I don't care if it is FCC regulations or not, it simply does not work well. People also tell me I sound horrible via bluetooth when I connect it to my phone.
THE GOOD: Solid GPS will get you where you want to go.
THE OTHER: There is no reason to pass over a cheaper Garmin Nuvi for this. WOW could it be a great product if it were done right! Sadly, overall, it is just a good Garmin Nuvi GPS in essence.

I returned my Garmin Nuvi 780 for a RoadMate
I asked for the nearest post office ... it didn't find it. I asked for an address and it popped up the West address and wouldn't let me enter the East address I needed. We didn't need the MP3 or the Bluetooth features. Then when we learned the model was discontinued and that the navigation tools would be discontinued in 2012, it didn't seem like a good purchase for $176.
We picked up our RoadMate 1475T for $50 less and so far it has been wonderful. Amazon was great about taking the Garmin back.

Nice Features, Easy to use, Hard to update maps, No MSN coverage
I bought this for my wife, who is Russian. She was very impressed that there is a Russian voice and text built in (among dozens of other languages). The system is very easy to use and the graphics are great. It has just about any POI that you could possibly want. Routes and directions are very clear, but you have to make sure you set your route preferences (as with any GPS), or you'll be driving down winding farm roads in the name of "shortest route". When you get the system, you can do a one time free map update download, which just wasn't working. By reading some blogs, I found out that it won't work with Internet Explorer (most of the time), so I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and was finally able to download the map update (took about 2 hours). I had to restart my laptop to get the update to run, but it seems to have installed correctly. I don't know if it made a difference, but I plugged in a 4GB SD card before installing the update; I read about people having problems with running out of memory in the middle of an update. It took a couple of tries to get our cell phones to find the bluetooth, but after the initial setup, they find each other quite well. I tried to activate the MSN Direct 3 month Free trial, but was told that there is no coverage in my area (Killeen, Texas). Fortunately, we are moving to San Antonio, which has coverage. Doesn't matter much; MSN Direct is going away in 2012, so I guess I'll get an FM traffic update reciever. We're happy with it overall; no real problems so far.

Industry standard - with quirks
The 755 is a recent PND that works well. It is the basic feature set of a post high end model with plenty of memory for additional maps, POI's and custom routes.
Many have noted a problem with the touchscreen and there are times where the registered point is off the touched point by several cm. This problem is not consistent but occurs often enough to be a nuisance, especially when browsing menus when you have to be very careful about heading into the wrong selections.
Map browsing is also inconsistent. The map will zoom and pan in unexpected ways at times. Even at low map settings, the drag can be bumpy and irregular.
The media player works well and the FM transmitter can be usable. I wish the rules for defining artists and albums were better documented.
The live traffic system is only for a very few specific areas and not for anywhere near where I use the PND, it seems. It's use to detect an empty FM slot for the media player was not adequate, either.
The maps may be good for cities, even though the most current one seems nearly a year out of date, but they do not include many NFS roads and navigable trails. When going to a campsite, I can't even get the route to go from point to point. Instead it goes 'offroad' to a point and back, then down the highway perpendicular to the next and out to it and so forth. For example, when hitting the Carson City bypass past the map's known road, it tried to get me back on its roads rather than just extrapolate to the next waypoint (route imported from Google). I have also encountered problems in that routing seems to prefer access roads rather than the freeway in routing.
Strong points include the user and development communities and Garmin's support of them. FOSS maps and POI collections are extensive and easy to obtain and use. Garmin has good software plus there are utilities like gpsbabel and gmaptogpx and others that extend the utility of the device in interesting ways.

An Excellent Device In the Hands of a Knowledgeable User
I purchased the 755T after considerable research including Amazon users' mixed reviews. I'm finding it an outstanding value. My experience with this device has been excellent. Rather than share its many virtues - covered elsewhere - let me share my observations on three weaknesses observed by other reviewers.
First, the accompanying documentation is limited to a Quick Start Guide. I encourage you to download the 76-page user manual from the Garmin website and read it cover-to-cover. Doing so should alleviate many pitfalls experienced by others. Second, map updates are - as many have noted - a slow (several hours) download. Certainly tedious if you hover over your PC. Two suggestions. Read and follow the directions exactly. (Get impatient, try a shortcut, and you're likely to have problems.) Next, as I did, simply activate the download program before going to bed and the software will be ready to install and run in the morning. Again, read and follow directions and it should go without a hitch. I had no problems. (IMPORTANT - deactivate your energy-saving power settings on your PC (Control Panel > Display > Screen Saver/Power) so your hard drive does not hibernate or shut off during the download.) Finally, several reviews note poor navigation (e.g., taking the long way around). In my experience no GPS device - the 755T or any other - is a substitute for common sense. Case in point - last night my wife and I drove to a restaurant accessible via a one-way access road. Leaving the restaurant, the Nuvi wanted to take us West, down the access road to the next highway cross-over where we could U-turn - a diversion of 2 miles. Unlike me, the Nuvi did not understand a shortcut through the parking lot back to an intersecting road that allowed us to reverse our original route to the restaurant. Once there, however, the 755T quickly recalculated and had us on the original path.
GPS is a tool. You need to know how to use it and how to blend it with your own observation and common sense. Do this and I'd be shocked if you don't find the 775T a very capable, dependable travel aid. Last word: the Garmin friction mount is superb - holds its position on the dash while driving; is transferrable to a second vehicle; and can be removed for storage to help avoid theft. Much preferred to a windshield/suction mount.

Nice Unit, Easy to Use, Quality a bit suspect
Purchased this unit for my wife, she had a GPS that was several years old and figured this would be a nice upgrade. Item is great, the lane assist is a very helpful, probably my wifes favorite feature. The route it selects is very logical (the older unit would suggest odd routes).
The only downside, Item was purchased as a christmas gift, here we are 2 months later and the unit stopped working. The display no longer funtions. When I called Garmin, I was told the wait time on the phone was 60 to 90 minutes. I went to get an RMA on the net, that will take 2 to 3 days, then I need to ship it back at my expense so they can repair or replace. (I've read that they usually send back a refurished one)
So the unit is nice, the quality not that best and the customer service and Garmin not all that great.

Garmin Nuvi 755T rocks!!!
I reviewed a number of models online, and researched Consumer Reports for a few months before actually purchasing this unit. The Garmin Nuvi 755T is outstanding, and surpassed my expectations right out of the box! It is incredibly easy to use, no manual needed -- extremely user-friendly machine, even for a novice GPS person. Saving and locating new routes, locations was very intuitive, and required little or no effort. On-screen prompts are helpful. Highly recommend this unit to any first-time GPS user looking for a moderately priced starter machine.

Questions & Answers
Question : What handsets have gps on apart from the nokia n95?
My son wants a handset with gps, I've been mulling over the n95 but it doesn't have too good reviews, the 8gb version sounds better, but its just too expensive. What about the n73 could we ad gps to it? Or does anyone have any other handset (sim free) suggestions?
Answer:
the Nokia E90 communicator, Nokia 6110 Navigator, also the Nokia N82 which is to be released soon.

Question : Can you fly a direct GPS route on international flights?
For example, can you legally fly a direct gps route from Guadeloupe to Opa Locka, FL? Or would you have to stick to airways? What are all the current reasons why our General Aviation system still uses airways?I've actually flown as co-pilot into Opa Locka International from Jamaica before, but it was an IFR flight. There were customs and immigrations officers there.
Answer:
If you are VFR (Visual flight rules,) you can fly any route you choose as long as you dont get into restricted airspace along the coast. You have procedures to get into US airspace, but yes you could go "GPS direct. Flying on the airways might be assigned to pilots filing and flying IFR (INSTRUMENT flight rules) where thier clearance will assign them route to fly. some times you CAN get GPS direct if you request it.I dont hink you could land at OpaLocka though, you are required to first land at a designated port of entry for a customs "inspection" when coming in from out side of US airspace.edit: I stand corrected and educated, I learned something today! Thanks for the info.

Question : Have you tried bringing a Car GPS aboard a plane while it is on during the whole trip?
What did you see from the GPS Screen? I know it is prohibited but I think someone may have actually have done it.
Answer:
I used to pull out an old handheld Magellan 315 when I traveled -- this was before we had the true navigation systems that we have today; it just basically told you where you were and didn't have any streets on it. It was a hoot -- you could tell have fast the airplane was going, what the altitude was, etc. It worked pretty well on a window seat -- nothing to obstruct the signal up there!I haven't tried it in years, and from what I've read the airlines have banned them for whatever reason.

Question : I am trying to buy a GPS. What is the difference between a Mount GPS and others GPS navigators?
I am trying to buy a GPS nothing to expensive, but something that works. I found Mount GPS but there is not much info about it. The more expensive ones have more details and are not mount. Question : how can i disable the gps inantena in my car work without cuting it?
in my car work there is a gps.. now can i disable it like it will have poor conection?
Answer:
Yes. And they will see the problem when they check the log and ask you to bring it in for service. I get the feeling they pay attention. If your sabotage is obvious, they can tell. It's easier to get another job with a work car that doesn't monitor your whereabouts. It's a free car for work, treat it like that. Good luck.

Question : How does a gps watch work? Can you track you spouse's location if their are wearing one?
Ok so lets say you suspect your spouse of cheating or at least not being honest about where they have been, so you get them a GPS watch because you cant spend your day following them or calling, will you be able to check their location if they have the watch on? How do they work exactly? I was also told about GPS I could put in the car, but it seems they have to be charged by a cigarette lighter, and how obvious is that if they can see it charging! Any advise?
Answer:
I don't know of a gps watch that transmits it's location. They are mostly for the wearer to get their own location. The car GPS could be hidden under the dash and wired under the dash without using lighter. But you'd have to have someone who knows what they are doing wire it.Do a search for child gps. you should find some good choices for your purpose.

Question : Why does my GPS take me totally different directions on the way to and from a place?
For example, I went on a job interview that was an hour away today and the directions the GPS gave me for the way there and the way home were completely different. Also, I have used my GPS to go to a friend's new house a few times, each time leaving from my house, and the GPS took me a different route every time. This doesn't make sense to me. I also feel like it takes me a very round-about way sometimes instead of sending me on the quickest way. Why is this? It's a Garmin Nuvi.
Answer:
Since we don't know the make/model of your GPS, we can't get into specifics.GPS units may indeed compute different routes coming and going. The speed limits in opposing lanes or the number of stops or expected traffic may be different. There may be one lane roads. If you have a unit that includes traffic or time of day updates, that'll factor in, too.

Question : What kind of GPS system is the most accurate and easy to use?
I am planning a road trip and I am horrible w/ directions. I am considering buying a GPS system for my car since we are driving from Wisconsin to New York City. Any suggestions?
Answer:
If you only need it short term, you have a number of options. Do you have a friend you could borrow one from? Consider renting a car and getting the satellite thing with it. But, consider this: you may already have almost everything you need. Many cell phones are satellite friendly. Most directions sites (I use mapquest.com) have an application you can download to your phone, and then 'send' your phone the directions from mapquest. Voila! It now has the capability to adjust for you on the fly. Goto your directional website of choice and see what hardware they support. (If they don't support your model of phone, try another site)A seasoned traveler with a decent directional ability, I get my directions from the site, and used to print them. Now, I just save the web page to my laptop (usually the printer friendly version) and have it open on the seat next to me.Drive safe!
