Customer Review :

Not quite sure yet.

The 765 seems to do the essential job ok but I will agree with others that the touch screen has some issues. I recalibrated it and that seemed to help somewhat but I still find that it erroneously selects icons which I clearly did not touch. I'd say 1 in every 20 or so touches, I'll have to take corrective action due to this flaw.
It seems to take me out of my way sometimes even though I've set the navigation to not avoid anything and I've also set it to take the fastest route. For example, I absolutely know the fastest route to my work and yet this insists on taking a path which is definitely not the fastest. In fact, it is likely one of the slower routes.
The rerouting works fairly well. I've gone against its directions many times and it seems to recalculate fairly readily.
For the most part it navigates correctly and displays street names in a timely manner however there have been a few times where it tells me that "I'm arriving at destination" and it is way too late for me to make the turn even though I'm at or under the speed limit.
The FM transmitter is ok. There are times when the static is noticeable but it's not annoying.
I've had no problems with volume on the unit itself or through the car speakers.
I have not tried lane assist or the traffic features yet.
Bluetooth works well and was easy to set up.
The battery is Lithium-Ion.
Bottom line is I'm going to test it some more over the next week or so and in areas I am less familiar with.

BLUETOOTH problem

The Garmin Nuvi 765 is great, BUT I also have the HTC Hero phone, It is NOT Bluetooth compatible with the Nuvi 765. Tech support said "Sorry". So unless they figure out a firmware upgrade, I am out-of-luck. Check the Garmin Bluetooth compatibility list if this is a requirement for your purchase.

An Okay GPS

This is an okay GPS. I like all of the features it has but am unimpressed with the maps. I tried to locate my home address and instead of being located under the town that I live in, it is located in the township I live in. If I am travelling to a place that is small and I don't know the township it will be a real pain to find the street. The maps or at least locating streets near a town are much easier to use on TomTom. Other than that, everything else is above average with this GPS.

Great Features and Functions. Hardware needs work.

I have been using the Nuvi for approximately nine months. I don't know how I lived without it before. The software is terrific! Easy to use and understand.

The hardware needs some work however. The life of the device is short: About an hour. Significantly less than the five advertised. The touch screen is primitive and clunky compared to what iTouch and iPhone users are accustomed to. Even though it recalibrates itself periodically, it still has errors. If you touch the "a" character, for example, the device will record an s, z, or q.

The most disconcerting problem was that the device simply stopped working one morning. It would not power up.

Garmin's product support pales compared to that of industry leaders (e.g., Apple). When you register the problem on their website, they send you an email pointing you back to the FAQ diagnostics that you've already tried. A 30-45 minute wait on hold is required in order to talk to a human being on their customer support lines.

Unfortunately I Returned This Unit

I bought the 765T with great hopes, despite user comments about the touch screen. After using it on a trip to Florida, I returned it. The touch screen is horrible, the traffic NEVER was accurate, the unit crashed at least ten times, and it was just a nuisance. This is unfortunate as the screen is clear and colorful and I liked the directions and screen layout. Garmin is the only manufacturer I have seen who provides the ability to plot routes (via MapSource) on your PC and then transfer the route, not just the start and end points, to the unit. If you use MapSource, just make sure you review your route a few times though. If you click a millionth of an inch off a highway, it thinks you want to exit the highway and go to that point. So the directions, left unchecked, would have you exit the highway, go to the point you clicked, then get back on the highway to head for your end destination. Annoying but I guess this makes sense since afterall, you did click a point off the highway. A user interface modification would be helpful to alert the user though (maybe Garmin reads this??)
Bluetooth worked well, although I disabled it as using my bluetooth earpiece was far better than using the Nuvi.
I have always used Garmin products and was really disappointed with this one. This unit was just too cumbersome and I found myself making excuses for keeping it.

Customer Review :

Feature Rich GPS w\Bluetooth - Highly Recommended!

The Garmin Nuvi 285WT GPS has far exceeded my expectations for an inexpensive GPS. This nice looking unit that has a lot of features usually found on more expensive devices. Here are my observations:

Pros:
+ Easy Setup; I didn't even need to read the "Quick Start" guide to get the unit functioning
+ Text-to-Speech; Clearly speaks road names
+ Accurate Directions; Suggested routes are good and the unit recalculates quickly if you diverge
+ Bluetooth Support; Can connect to a Bluetooth enables mobile phone to act as speaker phone (this was the main reason I bought this model)
+ Easy to Use; Easy to understand menu options makes customizing easy
+ Good Predictive Text; The unit automatically presents you with a list of choices as you enter data into the destination screen
+ Shows Posted Speed Limits; Unit displays the current speed limits on most major roads (very helpful, indeed)

Cons:
- Touch screen is not as sensitive as other devices, so it often takes a few presses to get the options selected
- No manual volume control, this makes it hard to adjust the volume to compensate for road noise

Misc:
* Support MSN Direct for updated travel information, but I don't plan on using this feature
* Supports Photo Navigation, which allows you to add a picture on a SD card and assign an address that the GPS can use as a destination - I haven't tried it, but might sometime in the future

This feature rich GPS works very well and is great value. I was lucky enough to pick this up on an Amazon "Gold Box" special, so it was an even better deal, but would likely be happy to pay the current price if I need to buy another one (as a gift, etc).

Highly Recommended!

Garmin 285 wt

I bought two of these units for my daughters as birthday presents.

They love them.

The units are very easy to setup and use. So far the accuracy has been good.

The Bluetooth capability is a plus and the fact they can link their cell phones to the GPS is a nice feature.

It's a Game Changer

This GPS is amazing. I recommend it to anyone with a car. It's not too complicated to get used to, and once you have it, it does wonders. I live in the country and city driving is tough for me, but with the Garmin with me I had no trouble. You can even search for local businesses, which was a huge help for us.

It also has bluetooth, so you can link your phone and talk on speaker through the Garmin. This was a nice feature that is good on long rides.

Keep your nüvi in place with this portable friction mount. It'll keep everything in plain sight when you need it and out of the way when you don't.

Place the mount on any stable surface, and adjust the position of your GPS to your liking. The friction mount weighs enough to keep your device put on the dash, even when sudden maneuvers are necessary. It's ideal for states in which the use of windshield suction mounts is illegal.

In addition to its convenience, you can quickly place your GPS out of sight, and without leaving any residue on the windshield, both handy for any potential prying eyes.

Very nice mount. It does move slightly when I am driving on curvy roads, but I am a very spirited driver. I like that is easy to move from car to car.

Loved it!

We used this on vacation and it was so nice to put it on the dash.
I have a Mini Van and used to put the GPS on the windshield, then
to check or change the screen, you have to reach and can be dangerous.
This is very convenient when changing the screen, with-in arms reach.
Easy to put away and no marks on your windshield. Love it so glad I
bought it, you will not regret it.

Great addition to my 265WT nuvi.

This nuvi portable mount works great and is pretty stable. The only time I had an issue was taking a curve a bit to fast. This is also easy to hide under my driver seat. Well worth it and much less expensive than the Garmin site even with a 20% discount.

Rating :

Works Great

Grips my dash really well. It is a great alternative when you don't want to "stick" the suction cup to the windshield.

Rating :

It actually works

I was a little sceptical of this when we first got it as a gift. It looked to bulky to actually be practical, so we didn't actually use it for a few months. But now after using it for almost a year, my wife and I are very satisfied with the product. We use it in two cars (Honda and Subaru) and and it has worked perfectly every time. No slipping, easy to use, and not as obtrusive as it appears. When not in use, we just stash the beanbag part under the seat or in a door pocket and put the GPS and plastic hardware in the glovebox. Thus, the tell-tale wrings from the windshield mount are gone, and potential thieves are none the wiser.

Editorial Review :

Garmin's nüvi 260W combines the thinprofile and attractive price point of other nüvi 200-series GPS with directions in real street names and a wide screen that lets you see more of what's around you as you drive. Garmin's line on the device is that, "the nüvi 260W gives consumers the most sought-after navigation features, while eliminating many of the premium add-ons. The result is a PND that simply gets you from point A to point B – reliably, efficiently, and with style." As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of a high-sensitivity integrated receiver, a slim, pocket-sized navigator with a gorgeous display, detailed NAVTEQ maps that lets  you search by name for more than 6 million points of interest like stores, restaurants or hospitals, and an easy, intuitive interface.

Text-To-Speech
The text-to-speech feature of the nüvi 260W means that device automatically calls out street names (saying "turn right on Main Street" instead of "turn right in 200 feet."). This feature lets drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways.

See More of What's Around
The 4.3-inch backlit widescreen touchscreen on the nüvi 260W gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Smart, Powerful Design
The nüvi 260W is built with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. The nüvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Garmin Lock
Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location

First Rate Map Data
The nüvi 260W comes preloaded with City Navigator NT North America--road coverage for the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico and nearly 6 million points of interest. City Navigator North America NT gives you everything you need to travel North America. Powered by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality digital map data, City Navigator brings you the most detailed street maps available so you can navigate with exact, turn-by-turn directions to any address or intersection.

Easy To Use Interface
Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Beyond Navigation

Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 260W features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the  Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs.

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras.

The Nuvi 260 is easy to use and a wonderful tool for finding
what's in the area, addresses to stores, restaurants and attractions.

    It works well.

    Great first GPS

After much research and deciding rather I really needed a GPS I bought the Nuvi 260W. I knew I wanted the wide screen and street name announce, other than that my needs were pretty basic. The 260W fits the bill. Power it up out of the box and you're ready to go. The on-screen prompts are simple to follow.

This little device makes driving to unfamiliar destinations a breeze...no more trying to follow a map or printed directions, especially at night. I also purchased the Friction-mount which makes it easy to put the GPS out of view with no suction mark on the windshield when parked in a public area.

Don't forget the one-time free map/GPS upgrade, I don't think it was well advertised in the paperwork. I learned about it reading the reviews and specifically looked for the upgrade after registering. Mine came loaded with 2007 maps so I'm sure there have been quite a few changes.

It is the best. I can't imagine getting by without it now that I am used to it. For people who have to go places where they are not familiar it helps immensely. It is much better than Mapquest because if you take a wrong turn it corrects your error. The only problem is that it once took me to an address a few blocks away, but that problem is rare I would think. It tells you how far you have to go and how long it will take. I recommend it .

I absolutely love this watch. I was a little nervous about buying it after reading some bad reviews but I am soooo glad I bought it. It is true, it takes some time to acquire the satellite signal but I have not experienced a drop in the signal.
The GPS is very accurate. I mapped my route before running and when the watch said I was done... I was done! You can set it to let you know when you reach certain distances. I have mine beep every mile and it helps my runs along. Also, I love breakdown it does, on the computer and the actual watch. Based on your settings it let's you know what your pace was for each interval, your average heart rate, and your max heart rate. Another plus is that it is very easy to load my runs from my Forerunner 305 to my [...] profile. And based on the information you can plot different parts of your runs against each other.

I must say I just LOVE this watch and you should definitely get one!!!

Great GPS, Not a very good HR monitor

I really like the GPS for tracking my runs. I also like the pace zone alerts. If I drop below a certain pace (or above a certain pace) it'll beep at me. I believe it has lowered my long run times because of this feature. There are too many features to discuss but I also like exporting my workouts to Google earth and seeing exactly where I was. Neat stuff!

" I was wondering if anyone knows of any GPS devices that can tell you in real-time during emergencies and/or disasters where the safe evacuation routes and emergency shelters are located?"To the best of my knowledge, there is NO GPS devices currently that offer real-time emergencies/disasters evacuation routes or information of emergency shelters. This does not mean you can't make your own route and plans. Some GPS system will allow you to store certain routes you prefer and use it when you feel necessary. This does not mean that the routes you have planned could be the most efficient routes during an emergency evacuation.Real Time traffic could help but it only offers alternative surface street routes which I would bet would also be packed.Best way is to have your GPS ready and when and if you need it, it will reroute you if you chose to drive a different direction than the route it has suggested.http://www.sftrforest.org/cwpp/APPENDIX%20G%20Evacuation%20Planning.pdfAs far as emergency shelters goes, it is easy, just contact your local government agency and ask for the address of all the emergency shelters near you and input them in your GPS address book or favorites.I would bet most schools, libraries, convention centers etc would be a good place to go in an emergency.Problem is the streets and shelters in major cities are not design to accommodate everyone and during an emergency, even the best GPS is not going to get you around or out of the city traffic jams, it maybe good if you are heading out of town or if you are in a rural area.It is a great question and I bet sooner or later someone will come up with a program that will allow evacuation routes and emergency shelters information, but for now, the demand is not enough to justify the cost of adding such features. If you wish to try to input your own emergency evacuation routes or see how well a GPS function during those conditions, you can rent a GPS from GPS4Rent http://www.gps4rent.com to try without the need of committing to a certain model, find the model that fit your needs best and than take the plunge and buy one from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc.

Question : What is a good, free gps program for the Blackberry Curver?
I have a Sprint Blackberry Curve 8330. The preloaded gps is horrible. It doesnt tell me to turn until I get right to the place I need to turn at, giving me no time to actually make the turn. Does anybody know of a good turn by turn gps for my Blackberry?

    Answer:
Unfortunately I never found one. I tried using Google maps, but would have been better off using a real map because it was completely useless other than showing me a highlighted route.

Question : Does my phones GPS work without network coverage?
Hi all,I'll soon be taking part in a four day cycle across the length of wales and planning on relying on my Blackberry gps positioning. Will it work even if i have no network coverage.

    Answer:
teh data /direction will be there but you wont get the maps as it needs the network to download the maps as you go!!

    Question : gps.......?
i have a extra gps tracking devise. it says legent and garmin on it. it locates way points and stuff like that. i was wondering if you could put it on someones car and track were they're going without you there and without them knowing. can anyone give me specific instructions on how to do this??

    Answer:
Nope. The Garmin eTrex Legend is a handheld GPS device that will pinpoint your location when you're out trekking or just walking about. It doesn't track your whereabouts. For that you need a GPS tracking device like the Trackstick or i-gotu GPS data logger.

Question : What is the difference between a GPS system and a digi-walker?
Is there a GPS system that I can put in my car but that also can be taken out and used when walking in an unfamiliar area or do they all do this? Is a digi-walker different from a GPS system? Is there a product that can serve both functions?

    Answer:
Hi Lojo,A digiwalker is just a glorified pedometer that has a GPS built in.You can get a more sophisticated GPS that works in your car and then as you leave your car you "mark" your location. You can also use it to find a location as you walk. Then when you are ready to return to your cay it will guide you directly there.Go here for a couple ideas - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-9437352-1756622?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=walki ng+gpsNorm

Question : How does a GPS system use Lorentz transformations for its functionality?
From what I understand, Lorentz transformations can determine the dilation of time with relative speed. (Of course I could be wrong). How does the GPS use this to function?

    Answer:
It is added into the backside algorithm to establish functional direction.

Question : What is the best way to use GPS asset tracking ?
Hi ! I just bought my brand new car and I consider set the GPS tracking for my new "babe"So guys, I just wanna some information about the GPS tracking system that could protect my asset from burglar. The type, price, and the best GPS that ok for car. Thank's

    Answer:
Well there are two different types of devices you can use for this I would recommend an On demand device you pay per locate so it doesn't have to be tracked all of the time so it saves you on the service charges.I would chose a company that has there own website that you can log into and also good tech support. price is a little more expensive for the unit but you will save if you don't have a monthly fee. around 299.99 is what I have seen on an on demand.now for a continuous tracker its cheaper for the device but your looking at a monthly charge of at least $20 plus and $20 is being generous. I hope this helped you out a little bit.

Question : How much do you have to invest in a GPS after intial purchase?
I want to buy a GPS and the intial cost isn't a problem for me. But are there a lot of "upkeep costs" like buying updates and maps and such. Is there a GPS out there that is a one-time cost deal with free upgrades?

    Answer:
Maybe you would not need updates. Things stay the same for a long time. You can make save the sites you want to return to and may find you don't use the mapping much.If you are going to use it indoors you need to make sure to buy one which can lock on to the satellites without line of sight. Many of them struggle with that.

Question : How do you use the GPS in Flight Simulator X?
How do u use the GPS on the Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 on Flight Simulator X? thanks!

    Answer:
I hope this works for you..The KidUpdate note: Since I originally wrote this, I have also found that it is possible to use a program called GPSout, http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html, to operate some GPS receivers and programs with Flight Simulator. GPSout causes the Flight Simulator position and velocity to be output through the serial port of the computer running Flight Simulator. Thus, the computer running Flight Simulator imitates an external GPS.I have found the Garmin aviation handhelds and the free Lowrance AirMap emulators running on a second computer work. Any program that uses an external GPS input should work. The new Lowrance Airmaps may work. I have more information in Cockpit GPS which can be downloaded from the home page for this, www.cockpitgps.com.2/13/2006 Reality XP has updated their line to include the Garmin CDI, the 430, and the ability to cross load between them. I have since updated my computer from the screenshot below and the Reality XP looks very nice.Garmin and Apollo for Microsoft Flight SimulatorReality XP makes it possible to have a full Garmin GNS 530, 430 or Apollo GL 50 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. It works well. If this sounds like a little bit of a sales pitch – it is. Reality XP, www.reality-xp.com, let me try their 530XP program and I like it. However, there is no quid pro quo. I think that it is a good program and would like to see it succeed. Thus, here is my quick unsolicited review.I am not an active flight simmer. I am an airline pilot with a book on how to use GPS at www.cockpitgps.com. My interest is in finding a good tool for pilots to learn how to use GPS. When I was working on my instrument rating, many years ago, I used early versions of Flight Simulator running on the Commodore 64 at home and the blazingly fast 12 Mhz. PCs at school. Even in these early versions, I found Flight Simulators to be a very useful training tool. GPS is tremendously useful and in many ways easy to use. However, it is also very complicated. A VOR has an OBS and a channel selector. Compare this to the many menus, functions, and data fields available on a GPS. The biggest weakness in GPS is pilot proficiency. Garmin offers an excellent free simulator for the GNS 400 and 500 series on their website at www.garmin.com. What the Reality XP product does is to interface this free GPS trainer with Microsoft Flight Simulator so that the Garmin trainer can be used within Flight Simulator. The Garmin simulator is excellent. When it is used with Reality XP, it is even better. The only significant problem that I had with operating 530 XP is that the behavior of the main cursor knob is a little different from operating the Garmin trainer in stand-alone mode. In many ways the behavior is an improvement, but it is a little confusing if you are used to the stand alone Garmin trainer application. Read the manual, but briefly: The knob is turned with the left and right mouse keys. If you have a wheel on your mouse, this will also move the cursor knob. To activate the cursor, press the wheel. For other mouse configurations, read the manual. I have a basic computer that will only run Flight Simulator in 800 x 600 screen resolution. In this mode, the GNS 530 is disproportionately large to the panel and blocks the other instruments needed to fly the aircraft. Each view: the outside, the instrument panel, and the GNS 530 runs in its own window. My trick is to maximize the GNS 530 so that the screen is more readable and shrink and move the instrument panel so that I can see the main flight instruments. It looks strange, but it works well. Why not just use the Microsoft GPS?FS 2002MS Flight Simulator 2002 includes a GPS, why would you want to spend the money for 530XP? The GPS in FS 2002 is not like any that I have seen in any aircraft. Even worse, the GPS simulation gets some significant things wrong. Let’s say that you are flying a heading of 180 and have a severe wind from 090. Your heading, the direction you are pointing, is 180. Your track, the direction that you are traveling over the ground, is actually towards the southwest. The GPS FS 2002 reports a value for track, but it is actually the heading. There are some ramifications to this. Using GPS you should be able to fly directly to a waypoint by turning so that your track matches your bearing. If you try this in FS 2002, you will fly a curved path. This is much like homing using an ADF, but it should not be because the GPS should use track whereas the ADF uses heading. The GPS in FS 2002 is flat out wrong. However, Reality XP works around this and behaves properly.FS 2004I purchased FS 2004 because it included a Garmin GNS 500 and GPS 295. I will give partial credit to the fact that Microsoft fixed the heading verses track issue. The Microsoft implementation of the GNS 500 is a rudimentary simulation that imitates the style and some of the functions of the GNS 500. It is pretty, but it misses the mark in significant ways. The Microsoft GPS 295 has even less resemblance to the functionality of an actual Garmin GPS 295. I will refer to the Microsoft implementation as the MS 500. The MS 500 falls well short of being a true representation of the Garmin GNS 500. If you are a casual simmer and want to play with GPS, the MS 500 is passable. However, if you want to learn how to use a GNS 500 for actual use or you are a serious flight simmer, the MS 500 is not sufficient.I just played with the MS 500 enough to get a quick idea of the functioning. This in no way is meant to be a full listing of the shortcomings, but just a couple of quick examples. On the GNS 500, there is a menu on almost every screen. On most MS 500 screens, pressing the MENU key will result in “NO OPTIONS.” Some of the useful options are the ability to customize the GNS 500 for airspace depictions and warnings. Other options include the ability to change the data fields that are displayed. Although the MS 500 offers airspace warnings and depiction, it does not offer the ability to customize them.To go directly to a point on the flight plan on the GNS 500, you can cursor to a waypoint on the flight plan and then select the direct key. You can also just press the direct key and choose a flight plan waypoint from the FPL box on the direct menu. If you press the direct key one more time before pressing the ENTER key, then you will get the leg from the previous waypoint to the selected waypoint rather than from the present position. The MS 500 does not work anything like this.
